Alberta designates new occupation - Cathodic Protection Technician - the first in Canada!

Cathodic Protection Technicianis now designated as an occupation under Alberta’s Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act. There are two levels of certification.

Cathodic Protection Technicians install, commission, monitor, evaluate, maintain, repair, decommission and assist in the design of cathodic protection systems.

Occupation Certification Based on Credentials

Cathodic Protection Technician (CPT) Level One

  • Successful completion ofNACE International CP 1 Testercourse, or equivalent
  • Successful completion ofEnform Cathodic Protection Rectifiercourse, or equivalent
  • Completion of 1,000 hours of work experience in 12 months
  • Submission of Occupational Certificate - Credentials Applicationwith $150.00 fee
  • Successfully complete required examination

Cathodic Protection Technician (CPT) Level Two

  • Successful completion of Cathodic Protection Technician Level One certification
  • Successful completion ofNACE International CP 2 Techniciancourse, or equivalent
  • Completion of 1,000 hours of work experience in 12 months
  • Submission ofOccupational Certificate - Credentials Applicationwith $150.00 fee
  • Successfully complete required examination

Transition Option* | Cathodic Protection Technician (CPT) Level Two

*Applicable only to January 31, 2015.

  • Successful completion ofNACE International CP 1 TesterandCP 2 Techniciancourses, or equivalent
  • Successful completion ofEnformCathodic Protection Rectifiercourse, or equivalent
  • Completion of 2,000 hours of work experience in 24 month
  • Submission ofOccupational Certificate - Credentials Applicationwith $150.00 fee
  • Successfully complete required examination

Occupation Certification Based on Work Experience

Cathodic Protection Technician (CPT) Level One  

  • Successful completion ofEnformCathodic Protection Rectifiercourse, or equivalent
  • Completion of 1,500 hours of work experience in 18 months
  • Submission ofOccupational Certificate - Work Experience Applicationwith $450.00 fee
  • Successfully complete required examination

Cathodic Protection Technician (CPT) Level Two
Certification based on work experience is not available for CPT Level Two. Industry is encouraging individuals to obtain competency through training.
