Scope of Profession - Carpenter

In this section,

  • “building envelope system” means the components of a building that separate heated space from unheated space or that are in contact with the exterior air or the ground;
  • “concrete reinforcement materials” includes metal or steel strands, wires, bars, mesh or sheets;
  • “structure” includes any type of residential, commercial, industrial, institutional or agricultural structure;
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the construction, installation and repair of structures or components of structures made of wood, concrete or other materials;
  • “wood” includes any by-product of wood, wood substitutes and similar materials.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities within the designated trade of carpenter: 

  • working with or making things with wood in the construction, installation or repair of structures or components of structures;
  • preparing site and building layouts;
  • constructing foundations and concrete structures;
  • framing structures;
  • applying interior and exterior finishes;
  • reviewing and interpreting construction drawings, plans, specifications, building codes and related documentation;
  • inspecting sub-soil excavations of structures;
  • operating hand and power tools related to the designated trade;
  • shoring and underpinning of existing structures, parts of structures or excavations;
  • laying out and erecting batter boards, building lines and setting elevations;
  • installing, using and dismantling personnel handling devices, scaffolds, ropes, slings, hoists on rigging installations, ladders, shoring, covered walkways and barricades; 
  • assembling, erecting, installing and dismantling structures; 
  • setting up hoarding and other temporary structures; 
  • framing the following: 
    • exterior walls and interior partitions; 
    • architectural features; 
    • post and beam construction and timber framing; 
    • plank walls;
    • roof systems; 
    • blocking, nailers and firestops; 
    • ceiling and floor systems; 
  • installing the following: 
    • preserved wood foundations; 
    • sill plates on foundation walls; 
    • drainage tile and pipe; 
    • beams and columns; 
    • floor frames; 
    • wood stairways and railings; 
    • metal stud non-loadbearing walls; 
    • suspended ceiling systems; 
    • engineered pre-fabricated roof systems; 
    • roof coverings; 
    • exterior and interior doors and windows; 
    • insulation materials in ceilings, walls and floors; 
    • air and vapour barriers; 
    • caulking, adhesion and sealant materials; 
    • exterior wall finishes; 
    • building envelope systems; 
    • gypsum and non-gypsum products on interior walls and ceilings; 
    • interior cabinets, display cases, mirrors, counters, laminates, panelling, mouldings and trim; 
    • prefabricated fireplaces; 
    • exterior attachments to structures including additions, porches, stoops and verandas; 
    • timber bents to support ramps, platforms and heavy piping; 
    • timber culverts; 
  • placement of precast concrete panels;
  • building and stripping forms for the following: 
    • beams and girders; 
    • piers and columns; 
  • building forms, installing concrete reinforcement materials, placing and consolidating concrete and stripping forms for the following:
    • footings; 
    • walls;
    • floors; 
    • sidewalks, driveways and curbs; 
    • stairs;
    • built-in-place concrete manholes, catch basins, utility vaults and other underground service boxes; 
    • tilt-up precast concrete panels; 
    • void forms for grade or subterranean concrete.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of carpenter:

  • working with or making things with wood in the construction, installation or repair of structures or components of structures;
  • preparing site and building layouts;
  • constructing foundations and concrete structures;
  • framing structure;
  • applying interior and exterior finishes;
  • reviewing and interpreting construction drawings, plans, specifications, building codes and related documentation;
  • inspecting sub‑soil excavations of structures;
  • operating hand and power tools related to the designated trade;
  • shoring and underpinning of existing structures, parts of structures or excavations;
  • laying out and erecting batter boards, building lines and setting elevations;
  • installing, using and dismantling personnel handling devices, scaffolds, ropes, slings, hoists on rigging installations, ladders, shoring, covered walkways and barricades;
  • assembling, erecting, installing and dismantling structures;
  • setting up hoarding and other temporary structures;
  • framing the following:
    • exterior walls and interior partitions;
    • architectural features;
    • post and beam construction and timber framing;
    • plank walls;
    • roof systems;
