Scope of Profession - Auto Body Technician - Auto Body Refinisher

In this section,

  • “substrate” means any surface of a motor vehicle to which paint or other coatings may be applied;
  • “undertakings of the branch of the designated trade” means the following:
    • the preparation of a substrate for a finish or topcoat application;
    • the application of a finish or topcoat to a substrate;
    • the removal and installation of non-structural components of the body, unibody or frame to repair collision damage to the motor vehicle.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the branch of the designated trade, the following are activities within the auto body refinisher branch of the auto body technician designated trade: 

  • preparing a substrate for a finish or topcoat application; 
  • applying a finish or topcoat to a substrate; 
  • removing and installing of non-structural components of the body, unibody or frame to repair collision damage to the motor vehicle; 
  • using hand, power and auto body tools to perform the activities set out in this section;
  • performing paint damage analyses and preparing refinishing estimates; 
  • recognizing substrates;
  • managing paint and paint related materials and inventories; 
  • filling and sanding substrate; 
  • protecting surfaces from the unintended application of a primer product, finish or topcoat; 
  • removing and installing trim and non-structural glass; 
  • mixing paint and primer products;
  • applying primer, primer-surfacer, undercoating or corrosion protection material; 
  • colour match paint; 
  • applying a finish or topcoat; 
  • polishing, washing and cleaning substrate.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the branch of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the auto body refinisher branch of the designated trade of auto body technician:

  • preparing a substrate for a finish or topcoat application;
  • applying a finish or topcoat to a substrate;
  • removing and installing of non‑structural components of the body, unibody or frame to repair collision damage to the motor vehicle;
  • using hand, power and auto body tools to perform the restricted activities set out in this section;
  • performing paint damage analyses and preparing refinishing estimates;
  • recognizing substrate;
  • managing paint and paint related materials and inventories;
  • filling and sanding substrate;
  • protecting surfaces from the unintended application of a primer product, finish or topcoat;
  • removing and installing trim and non‑structural glass;
  • mixing paint and primer products;
  • applying primer, primer‑surfacer, undercoating or corrosion protection material;
  • colour match paint;
  • applying a finish or topcoat;
  • polishing, washing and cleaning substrate.
