Scope of Profession - Industrial Mechanic (Millwright)

In this section,

  • “stationary rotating equipment” means any type of plant, industrial machinery or mechanical equipment and includes the following:
    • stationary and industrial engines;
    • steam and gas turbines;
    • pumps;
    • heat exchangers;
    • conveyor systems;
    • gears and speed changers;
    • mining equipment;
    • logging equipment;
    • compressors;
    • fluid power systems;
    • air blowers and vacuum pumps and fans;
    • gas and air dryers;
    • refrigeration;
    • power transmissions;
    • couplings and clutches;
    • prime movers;
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the following:
    • the installation, maintenance, repair, removal and replacement of stationary rotating equipment;
    • the diagnosis of problems relating to stationary rotating equipment.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities within the designated trade of industrial mechanic (millwright): 

  • installing, maintaining, repairing, removing and replacing stationary rotating equipment; 
  • dismantling, assembling and repairing parts and components in stationary rotating equipment; 
  • removing and installing electric motors, excluding the electrical disconnecting or hookup of electric motors; 
  • diagnosing problems relating to stationary rotating equipment; 
  • fitting, aligning and testing parts and components in stationary rotating equipment; 
  • condition monitoring, vibration analysis and laser alignment of stationary rotating equipment;
  • fitting bearings, aligning gears and shafts, attaching motors and connecting couplings and belts in relation to stationary rotating equipment; 
  • using hand, power and other tools of the designated trade while working on stationary rotating equipment; 
  • interpreting drawings and plans and laying out and developing projects according to specifications; 
  • using precision instruments to measure, assemble and fit complex plant or industrial machinery or other related equipment; 
  • setting up and operating standard machine tools, including saws, drill presses, lathes and milling machines, and their attachments, to facilitate the efficient completion of the assembly and repair of stationary rotating equipment; 
  • using measuring and testing instruments and devices in relation to stationary rotating equipment; 
  • using rigging equipment in relation to stationary rotating equipment; 
  • heating and cutting with oxyfuel equipment; 
  • tack welding with welding equipment.’

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of industrial mechanic (millwright):

  • installing, maintaining, repairing, removing and replacing stationary rotating equipment;
  • dismantling, assembling and repairing parts and components in stationary rotating equipment;
  • removing and installing electric motors, excluding the electrical disconnecting or hookup of electric motors;
  • diagnosing problems relating to stationary rotating equipment;
  • fitting, aligning and testing parts and components in stationary rotating equipment;
