Scope of Profession - Plumber

In this section,

  • “plumbing” means any kind of residential, commercial, institutional or industrial piping systems, including fixtures and fittings, and includes the following:
    • below ground storm and sanitary systems;
    • above ground storm and sanitary systems;
    • underground public water supply systems;
    • water distribution systems;
    • fixtures, appliances and trim;
    • water supply systems;
    • hydronic systems;
    • irrigation systems;
    • compressed gas, medical gas, air and vacuum systems;
    • water treatment devices;
    • fire protection systems other than commercial sprinkler systems;
    • ornamental water systems;
    • fuel gas systems and appliances;
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the fabrication, installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of plumbing.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities within the designated trade of plumber: 

  • fabricating, installing, altering, maintaining and repairing plumbing; 
  • determining location, size and material required from prints and specifications;
  • compiling material breakdown and takeoff; 
  • using tools and special equipment; 
  • applying codes to installation requirements; 
  • rigging equipment and piping components; 
  • designing, installing and maintaining hydronic systems; 
  • examining, installing, fabricating, testing, maintaining and replacing 
    • water treatment equipment, piping and controls, 
    • drain, waste and vent piping systems,
    • private and public water supply systems, 
    • water distribution systems, 
    • plumbing fixtures, appliances and trim, 
    • rain water leaders, and 
    • supports and hangers; 
  • ensuring that all installations, fixtures, equipment and hydronic and water treatment systems
    • are properly sized, aligned, supported and graded, 
    • meet the requirements of the appropriate codes and permits, 
    • meet the environmental protection requirements, and 
    • meet the requirements as specified by the manufacturer of the fixtures, equipment and systems; 
  • maintaining and servicing private sewage systems.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of plumber:

  • fabricating, installing, altering, maintaining and repairing plumbing;
  • determining location, size and material required from prints and specifications;
  • compiling material breakdown and takeoff;
  • using tools and special equipment;
  • applying codes to installation requirements;
  • rigging equipment and piping components;
  • designing, installing and maintaining hydronic systems;
  • examining, installing, fabricating, testing, maintaining and replacing
    • water treatment equipment, piping and controls,
    • drain, waste and vent piping systems,
    • private and public water supply systems,
    • water distribution systems,
    • plumbing fixtures, appliances and trim,
    • rain water leaders, and
    • supports and hangers;
  • ensuring that all installations, fixtures, equipment and hydronic and water treatment systems
    • are properly sized, aligned, supported and graded,
    • meet the requirements of the appropriate codes and permits,
    • meet the environmental protection requirements, and
    • meet the requirements as specified by the manufacturer of the fixtures, equipment and systems;
  • maintaining and servicing private sewage systems.
