Scope of Profession - Welder

In this section,

  • “component” means any object that consists of ferrous or non‑ferrous metal and includes the following objects that are made of or that consist of ferrous or non‑ferrous metal:
    • structure
    • pipe;
    • vessels;
    • containers;
  • “undertakings of the branch of the designated trade” means the fabrication, service, maintenance and repair of components.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the branch of the designated trade, the following activities are performed within the welder branch of the designated trade of welder: 

  • fabricating components; 
  • servicing, maintaining and repairing components; 
  • setting up oxyfuel accessories using recommended installation procedures; 
  • cutting, shaping and fitting steel using oxyfuel processes; 
  • cleaning and inspecting cut surfaces; 
  • fusion welding using manual oxyfuel processes; 
  • brazing and braze welding using oxyfuel processes; 
  • applying surfacing materials using oxyfuel processes; 
  • joining metals using soldering processes; 
  • setting up and welding using shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, flux core arc, submerged arc and gas tungsten arc welding processes; 
  • cutting and gouging using electric arc welding processes; 
  • welding and cutting using plasma arc processes; 
  • setting up equipment and welding using resistance welding processes;
  • identifying metals and performing preparation and assembly tasks prior to welding; 
  • performing supplementary and disassembly procedures; 
  • using hand tools, power tools and shop equipment; 
  • using new innovative technological changes in the designated trade with respect to 
    • materials or method of construction, and 
    • the carrying out of the activities set out in this section.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the branch of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the welder branch of the designated trade of welder:

  • fabricating components;
  • servicing, maintaining and repairing components;
  • setting up oxyfuel accessories using recommended installation procedures;
  • cutting, shaping and fitting steel using oxyfuel processes;
  • cleaning and inspecting cut surfaces;
  • fusion welding using manual oxyfuel processes;
  • brazing and braze welding using oxyfuel processes;
  • applying surfacing materials using oxyfuel processes;
  • joining metals using soldering processes;
  • setting up and welding using shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, flux core arc, submerged arc and gas tungsten arc welding processes;
  • cutting and gouging using electric arc welding processes;
  • welding and cutting using plasma arc processes;
  • setting up equipment and welding using resistance welding processes;
  • identifying metals and performing preparation and assembly tasks prior to welding;
  • performing supplementary and disassembly procedures;
  • using hand tools, power tools and shop equipment;
  • using new innovative technological changes in the designated trade with respect to
    • materials or method of construction, and
    • the carrying out of the restricted activities set out in this section.
