History:
The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) is the national industry organization representing the structural steel, open web steel joist and platework fabricating industries. Formed in 1930, CISC was granted Federal Charter as a non-profit industry association in 1942. CISC operates as a technical, marketing and government relations organization.

Canadian steel fabricating firms and Canadian steel mills are members of the CISC. Its honorary membership category includes representatives from major foreign steel producers. In June 1990, Associate Membership categories were established for Detailer, Erector and Supplier firms. Individuals who are registered Engineers or Architects may join CISC as Associate Professional Members; contractors, quantity surveyors and others interested in steel construction are also welcome to join as Associate Technical Members. With total membership roster of over 400, more than 120 fabricators across Canada belong to the CISC.

Fabricator Members produce fabricated structural steel for buildings, bridges, tanks, platework and other similar steel structures. In addition, many member companies are also engaged in related activities such as heavy machinery manufacturing, production of castings and wholesale steel.

CISC is governed by a Board of Directors representing CISC member companies of various sizes, located from coast-to-coast in Canada. National representation also is provided through six CISC regions, each with its own Regional Committee.

CISC promotes good design and safety, together with efficient and economical use of steel as a means of expanding the construction markets for structural steel, joists and platework.

CISC serves the industry, owners, developers, architects, engineers, contactors, educational institutions and all levels of government. CISC's objective is to expand the construction market for our industry. This is done through many mediums, such as standard development, education, research, publications and project design assistance. Scholarship funds are developed through generous donations by Regional Membership.

The Alberta Regional Committee comprises 54 members, 20 of whom are local fabricator firms. Since the mind-nineties, Alberta Regional Committee has been presenting scholarships to promising engineering students and apprentices from local universities and colleges. Through these efforts of encouragement and financial assistance, the Regional Membership facilitates interest and achievement with the younger generations entering into the industry.
