Confirming Your Eligibility for Awards

The Awards and Scholarships section of your MyTradesecrets account allows you to declare your eligibility for certain awards online. Once your eligibility has been verified, a cheque will be mailed out automatically.

The online eligibility check is currently available for the Apprentice Training Award. Other awards may be added at a future date.

What you need to know

In order to complete your award declaration online, you must

  • consent to Alberta Advanced Education using your personal information for the purpose of determining eligibility for and administration of awards and scholarships
  • provide your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • confirm your eligibility through the Awards and Scholarships section of your MyTradesecrets account

Checking your eligibility and submitting your declaration

If you appear to meet the eligibility criteria for an award, you will be notified by email and a notice will appear on the home page of your MyTradesecrets account. Go to the Awards and Scholarships section of your MyTradesecrets to confirm your eligibility.

Consent and SIN on file

If you have previously provided consent and your SIN to Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT), you will see a blue Check Eligibility button beside each award you may qualify for.

  1. Click the Check Eligibility button to bring up the Confirmation box.

  2. Read the confirmation statement. If you meet the listed criteria, type “I qualify” in the box, then click the Next button.

  3. Read the declaration statement. If you agree, click the checkbox, then click the Submit button.

  4. The status of your award application will change to In Progress. Your correspondence list (found under the Applications tab) will also be updated with a PDF version of your declaration.

If your eligibility is verified you will automatically receive a cheque from Alberta Student Aid within 30 days. Your status in the Awards and Scholarships section will also change to Approved.

Consent required

Consent is required for each application. If you have not already given consent, you will see a blue Consent Required button beside each award that you need to provide consent for.

  1. Click the Consent Required button.

  2. A new window will open with the consent statement. Read it and select your choice. If you consent and AIT already has your SIN on file, you will see a message that your SIN has already been provided. Note: if you do not consent, you will not be considered for these awards.

  3. If AIT does not have your SIN on file, you will need to type it in. You cannot copy and paste into the box; you must type the numbers in.

  4. Click the Submit button. Your correspondence list (found under the Applications tab) will also be updated with a PDF version of your consent choice.

  5. Once you have completed the consent process, the button on the Awards and Scholarships page will become Check Eligibility. Follow the process in the consent and SIN on file section.

SIN required

If AIT does not have your SIN on file, you may see a SIN required message in the action/status field.

When this happens, you must add your SIN through the Applications section.

  1. Go to the Applications tab.

  2. Click the blue Update My Consent/SIN button.

    • If you don’t see this button, click the Details link beside your application. The bottom of the page will update with the information for that application.

  3. When you click Update My Consent/SIN, a new window will open with the consent statement. Read it and select “I Consent” to bring up the SIN entry field.

  4. Type your SIN into the box. You cannot copy and paste into the box; you must type the numbers in. Remember you are not required to consent or provide your SIN, but if you do not you can’t be considered for the award.

  5. Click the Submit button. Your correspondence list (found under the Applications tab) will also be updated with a PDF version of your consent choice.

If your award application is cancelled

If your award application shows a status of Cancelled, but you are still in the eligibility time frame, the Check Eligibility button will reappear. This allows you to immediately reapply if you now meet the Apprentice Training Award eligibility criteria.

Follow the process in checking your eligibility and submitting your declaration to resubmit your declaration.

Why was my award application cancelled?

You may not have fully met the criteria for the award. Recheck the criteria on the award page on Tradesecrets.

Apprentice Training Award

If you are in the Boilermaker or Ironworker Apprenticeship Administration Agencies and your award application has been cancelled, contact them to ensure your name appears on the Out of Work list.

If you feel you have extenuating circumstances that may impact the decision, send a detailed email summarizing the situation to AT.Award@gov.ab.ca.
