Industry Pathways: Foundation Drillers
Industry Pathways: Foundation Drillers
The Foundation Driller occupation is developing a stage 1 proposal for the Industry Pathways process to explore creating an Industry Training Program (ITP) with Trade Designation. Current efforts focus on labour market research, industry outreach, and building a representative working group.
The working group’s key stage 1 tasks include:
- demonstrating suitability for Industry Pathways,
- establishing an industry working group,
- determining the education and/or regulatory needs of the occupation and selecting an Industry Pathway option,
- gathering labour market, training, certification and other information related to the occupation,
- formulating a high-level program design and identifying potential restricted activities, and
- developing and submitting a stage 1 proposal.
Industry Pathways Process Overview
Industry Pathways allows industry to explore options to train and certify professionals under the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act (STAEA). The Industry Pathways initiative involves a multi-year, four-stage process with approvals between each stage.

Industry Training Programs and Designated Trades
Industry Training Program
- Provides a flexible education option for occupations better suited to industry-led training than a full apprenticeship education program.
- Can be shorter and less complex than a full apprenticeship education program.
- Establishes standardized industry-provided training across Alberta.
- Is completed mainly on-the-job but may also include industry-provided lab or classroom training.
- Provides a government-issued Certificate of Achievement.
- Industry must have resources to develop and maintain curriculum and support program participation and trainee completions.
Visit the policy section of the Industry Pathways webpage for detailed information on Industry Training Program requirements.
Designated Trades
- Are occupations regulated under the STAEA.
- Establishes industry‑driven requirements for journeyperson certification, which shows someone is:
- highly skilled and competent in their trade, and
- authorized to work anywhere in Alberta.
- Can create a framework to restrict certain activities to qualified individuals.
Visit the policy section of the Industry Pathways webpage for detailed information on designated trade requirements.
