Scope of Profession - Steamfitter-Pipefitter
In this section,
- “piping system” means any type of commercial or industrial piping system and includes the following:
- hot liquid systems;
- high and low pressure steam systems;
- boilers and controls for boilers;
- control and indicating devices systems;
- heating and cooling systems;
- heat exchanger systems;
- process systems;
- power plant systems;
- compressed gas systems;
- vacuum, pneumatic and hydraulic systems;
- fire protection systems other than sprinkler systems;
- flue gas systems;
- water treatment systems;
- fuel systems;
- medical gas systems;
- “undertakings of the designated trade” means the fabrication, installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of piping systems.
Undertakings and Activities
When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following activities are performed within the designated trade of steamfitter-pipefitter:
- fabricating, installing, altering, maintaining and repairing piping systems;
- determining location, size and material required;
- producing fabrication and layout drawings from prints and specifications;
- compiling material breakdown and takeoff;
- identifying and using tools and special equipment that are used to carry out the activities set out in this section;
- applying codes to installation requirements;
- rigging, hoisting and lifting equipment and piping components;
- installing, maintaining, servicing and troubleshooting boilers and controls;
- installing, maintaining and servicing heat exchange equipment and controls;
- cutting, preparing, aligning and assembling piping;
- installing, maintaining and servicing pumps, valves and related equipment;
- installing, maintaining and servicing components in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems;
- fabricating and installing pipe supports, hangers and equipment supports.
Restricted Activities
The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of steamfitter‑pipefitter:
- fabricating, installing, altering, maintaining and repairing piping systems;
- determining location, size and material required;
- producing fabrication and layout drawings from prints and specifications;
- compiling material breakdown and takeoff;
- identifying and using tools and special equipment that are used to carry out the restricted activities set out in this section;
- applying codes to installation requirements;
- rigging, hoisting and lifting equipment and piping components;
- installing, maintaining, servicing and troubleshooting boilers and controls;
- installing, maintaining and servicing heat exchange equipment and controls;
- cutting, preparing, aligning and assembling piping;
- installing, maintaining and servicing pumps, valves and related equipment;
- installing, maintaining and servicing components in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems;
- fabricating and installing pipe supports, hangers and equipment supports.
