Scope of Profession - Heavy Equipment Technician - Transport Trailer Mechanic

In this section,

  • “off‑road equipment” means industrial vehicles, engines, equipment and attachments;
  • “on‑road equipment” means on‑highway truck and transport vehicles designed primarily for commercial use or for hauling bulk goods;
  • “transport trailer” means a commercial transport device connected to or moved by on‑road or off‑road equipment and does not include
    • transport trailer bodies, or
    • mobile refrigeration and heating equipment as defined in section 123;
  • “undertakings of the branch of the designated trade” means the maintenance, component replacement, diagnosis and repair of transport trailers.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the branch of the designated trade, the following are activities within the transport trailer mechanic branch of the designated trade of heavy equipment technician: 

  • maintaining, diagnosing problems and repairing transport trailers; 
  • replacing components on transport trailers;
  • retrieving and inputting applicable information using service-related computer software programs;
  • inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing and repairing 
    • suspensions, undercarriages and frames,
    • braking systems, 
    • trailer couplers and hitches, 
    • landing gear, 
    • electrical systems, and
    • hydraulic systems.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the branch of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the transport trailer mechanic branch of the designated trade of heavy equipment technician:

  • maintaining, diagnosing problems and repairing transport trailers;
  • replacing components on transport trailers;
  • retrieving and inputting applicable information using service‑related computer software programs;
  • inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing and repairing
    • suspensions, undercarriages and frames,
    • braking systems,
    • trailer couplers and hitches,
    • landing gear,
    • electrical systems, and
    • hydraulic systems.
