Scope of Profession - Appliance Service Technician

In this section,

  • “appliance” means the following:
    • a device or machine operated by electricity or gas that is designed and used or intended to be used for
      • the cooking or baking of food,
      • the washing or drying of dishes, utensils and cooking and baking equipment,
      • the washing or drying of clothes,
      • the disposal of garbage,
      • the filtration of air, or
      • the heating of water,
        including the following:
      • electric and gas ranges;
      • hood fans;
      • microwave ovens;
      • dishwashers;
      • waste compactors and waste disposers;
      • clothes washers;
      • electric and gas clothes dryers;
      • electric hot water heaters;
      • electronic air filters;
    • a device or machine operated by electricity or gas that is designed and manufactured as a self‑contained, stand‑alone unit used or intended to be used for
      • the cooling of food or of a space,
      • the making of ice, or
      • the dehumidification of air,  including the following:
      • electric and gas refrigerators;
      • ice makers;
      • electric and gas freezers;
      • air conditioners;
      • dehumidifiers;
  • “commercial appliance” means a device or machine operated by electricity or gas that is designed and used or intended to be used for
    • the cooking or baking of food,
    • the washing or drying of dishes, utensils and cooking and baking equipment,
    • the washing or drying of clothes,
    • the disposal of garbage,
    • the filtration of air, or
    • the heating of water,  and includes the following:
    • electric and gas ranges;
    • hood fans;
    • microwave ovens;
    • dishwashers;
    • waste compactors and waste disposers;
    • clothes washers;
    • electric and gas clothes dryers;
    • electronic air filters;
    • electric hot water heaters;
  • “undertakings of the branch of the designated trade” means the installation, service, maintenance, repair, removal and replacement of appliances and commercial appliances and their related parts and components.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the branch of the designated trade, the following are activities within the appliance service technician branch of the designated trade of appliance service technician:

  • installing appliances and commercial appliances, excluding initial installations governed by electrical, gas and plumbing codes and regulations; 
  • servicing, maintaining and repairing of appliances and commercial appliances; 
  • installing, removing, repairing and replacing parts and components of appliances and commercial appliances; 
  • diagnosing problems respecting appliances and commercial appliances; 
  • using hand tools, power tools and refrigeration tools while working on appliances and commercial appliances;
  • using, in relation to appliances and commercial appliances, electrical and other measuring and testing devices; 
  • soldering and brazing on or in relation to appliances and commercial appliances;
  • wiring or installing or removing wiring in appliances and commercial appliances; 
  • installing, removing or repairing hoses and piping in appliances and commercial appliances; 
  • splicing similar and dissimilar metals used in or in relation to appliances and commercial appliances; 
  • installing and removing gases and liquids used in appliances and commercial appliances.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the branch of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the appliance service technician branch of the designated trade of appliance service technician:

  • installing appliances and commercial appliances, excluding initial installations governed by electrical, gas and plumbing codes and regulations;
  • servicing, maintaining and repairing of appliances and commercial appliances;
  • installing, removing, repairing and replacing parts and components of appliances and commercial appliances;
  • diagnosing problems respecting appliances and commercial appliances;
  • using hand tools, power tools and refrigeration tools while working on appliances and commercial appliances;
  • using, in relation to appliances and commercial appliances, electrical and other measuring and testing devices;
  • soldering and brazing on or in relation to appliances and commercial appliances;
  • wiring or installing or removing wiring in appliances and commercial appliances;
  • installing, removing or repairing hoses and piping in appliances and commercial appliances;
