Scope of Profession - Commercial Appliance Service Technician

In this section,

  • “commercial appliance” means a device or machine operated by electricity or gas that is designed and used or intended to be used for
    • the cooking or baking of food,
    • the washing or drying of dishes, utensils and cooking and baking equipment,
    • the washing or drying of clothes,
    • the disposal of garbage,
    • the filtration of air, or
    • the heating of water,
      and includes the following:
    • electric and gas ranges;
    • hood fans;
    • microwave ovens;
    • dishwashers;
    • waste compactors and waste disposers;
    • clothes washers;
    • electric and gas clothes dryers;
    • electronic air filters;
    • electric hot water heaters;
  • “undertakings of the branch of the designated trade” means the installation, service, maintenance, repair, removal and replacement of commercial appliances and their related parts and components.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the branch of the designated trade, the following are activities within the commercial appliance service technician branch of the designated trade of appliance service technician designated trade: 

  • installing commercial appliances, excluding initial installations governed by electrical, gas and plumbing codes and regulations; 
  • servicing, maintaining and repairing of commercial appliances; 
  • installing, removing, repairing and replacing parts and components of commercial appliances; 
  • diagnosing problems respecting commercial appliances; 
  • using hand tools, power tools and refrigeration tools while working on commercial appliances; 
  • using, in relation to commercial appliances, electrical and other measuring and testing devices; 
  • wiring or installing or removing wiring in commercial appliances; 
  • installing, removing or repairing hoses and piping in commercial appliances; 
  • splicing similar and dissimilar metals used in or in relation to commercial appliances.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the branch of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the commercial appliance service technician branch of the designated trade of appliance service technician:

  • installing commercial appliances, excluding initial installations governed by electrical, gas and plumbing codes and regulations;
  • servicing, maintaining and repairing of commercial appliances;
  • installing, removing, repairing and replacing parts and components of commercial appliances;
  • diagnosing problems respecting commercial appliances;
  • using hand tools, power tools and refrigeration tools while working on commercial appliances;
  • using, in relation to commercial appliances, electrical and other measuring and testing devices;
  • wiring or installing or removing wiring in commercial appliances;
  • installing, removing or repairing hoses and piping in commercial appliances;
  • splicing similar and dissimilar metals used in or in relation to commercial appliances.
