Scope of Profession - Electric Motor Systems Technician
In this section,
- “electrical machines, systems and equipment” means the following:
- electrical measuring devices;
- electrical machine components;
- all types of electro‑mechanical equipment whether or not it is
- gear driven,
- belt driven, or
- direct coupled;
- electrical switching circuits;
- electrical fans, blowers and pumps;
- transformers;
- single phase motors;
- magnetic switches and control circuits;
- phase converters;
- three phase motors, starters and controllers;
- synchronous machines;
- industrial electronic controls;
- electric welders;
- eddy current clutches, couplings and brakes;
- inverter and vector drives;
- static and dynamic balancing;
- programmable controllers;
- “undertakings of the designated trade” means the repair, installation, replacement, modification and testing of electrical machines, systems and equipment.
Undertakings and ActivitiesWhen practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities within the designated trade of electric motor systems technician:
- installing electrical machines, systems and equipment;
- repairing, replacing, modifying and testing of electrical machines, systems and equipment;
- testing, repairing and reconditioning electric machines, motors and generators and AC and DC welders;
- modifying motors, including windings, electrical connections and bearings;
- rigging and hoisting related to the designated trade;
- performing power measurement;
- reconditioning and repairing motor-generator sets;
- reconditioning and repairing transformers;
- reconditioning and repairing electrical control components;
- manufacturing, testing and repairing electrical control panels;
- disconnecting, servicing and reconnecting electrical fans, blowers, pumps or electrical devices from existing consumer power supplies;
- examining, testing and lubricating mechanical components of motors and generators;
- examining, testing and checking the operation of electrical components of motors, generators, transformers and control equipment;
- determining the need, extent and type of repairs required and preparing reports for time and costs estimations;
- examining, servicing and aligning or replacing couplings;
- performing predictive and preventative maintenance services;
- examining, servicing or replacing bearings, seals and gaskets;
- repairing or replacing stators and motor windings in AC and DC motors and generators and welders;
- repairing, replacing or reconditioning commutators and slip ring assemblies;
- assembling and testing motors and generators for correct operation;
- examining and testing controls and indicating instruments to determine the nature and extent of repairs required;
- repairing or replacing control components and indicating instruments;
- performing minor tune-ups of gasoline engines used for generator and welder drives;
- inspecting and testing to establish condition of transformers;
- removing transformer cores and coils from transformer housings;
- repairing damaged insulators and insulating material in respect of transformers;
- repairing and replacing coil connections in respect of transformers;
- removing and rewinding primary windings and installing primary windings;
- removing and rewinding secondary windings and installing secondary windings;
- repairing or replacing tap changing switches;
- checking and repairing transformer cores;
- repairing transformer housings;
- testing, removing and replacing transformer oil;
- assembling transformers and placing in transformer housings;
- inspecting and testing condition of control components including relays, solenoids, contactors and similar components;
- dismantling, repairing and rewinding components and assembling and testing for correct operation;
- interpreting and evaluating customers’ requirements, drawings and specifications;
- preparing and laying out materials for and manufacturing and assembling enclosures and panels;
- determining locations of components and installing and wiring the components in enclosures and panels;
- testing control panels for correct operation according to drawings and specifications;
- inspecting control panels for damage and faulty components;
- repairing and verifying certification of electrical equipment and components used in hazardous locations;
- painting and refinishing electrical apparatus.
Restricted Activities The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of electric motor systems technician:
- installing electrical machines, systems and equipment;
- repairing, replacing, modifying and testing of electrical machines, systems and equipment;
- testing, repairing and reconditioning electric machines, motors and generators and AC and DC welders;
- modifying motors, including windings, electrical connections and bearings;
- rigging and hoisting related to the designated trade;
- performing power measurement;
- reconditioning and repairing motor‑generator sets;
- reconditioning and repairing transformers;
- reconditioning and repairing electrical control components;
- manufacturing, testing and repairing electrical control panels;\
- disconnecting, servicing and reconnecting electrical fans, blowers, pumps or electrical devices from existing consumer power supplies;
