Scope of Profession - Instrumentation and Control Technician

In this section,

  • “instrument” means any type of industrial, commercial or domestic instrumentation and includes the following:
    • temperature, pressure, flow, analytical and level indicators, recorders, controllers and sensors;
    • density indicators and sensors;
    • weight indicators and sensors;
    • viscosity and consistency indicators and sensors;\
    • pH indicators and sensors;
    • oxidation reduction potential indicators and sensors;
    • oxygen analysis equipment;
    • gas analyzers;
    • turbidity and smoke density analyzers;
    • moisture and humidity sensing and indicating systems;
    • electrical conductivity sensing and indicating systems;
    • sensors and indicators for measurement of speed, position, proximity and time;
    • gas and liquid chromatographs;
    • spectrophotometer analyzers;
    • spectrometers;
    • pneumatic, fluidic, robotic, fibre‑optic, hydraulic and electronic control devices and systems;
    • pneumatic, fluidic, robotic, fibre‑optic, hydraulic and electronic transmitters;
    • pneumatic, fluidic, robotic, fibre‑optic, hydraulic and electronic transducers;
    • pneumatic, fluidic, robotic, fibre‑optic, hydraulic and electronic recorders;
    • digital to analog and analog to digital converters;
    • data acquisition systems, telemetric systems, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, programmable logic controller systems and distributed control and display systems;
    • monitoring devices and alarm systems;
    • valve positioners;
    • electrical and pneumatic valve actuators;
    • control valves and final control elements;
    • vibration sensing systems;
    • ultra‑violet and infra‑red fire detection systems;
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the installation, calibration, testing and maintenance of instruments.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities within the designated trade of instrumentation and control technician: 

  • installing, calibrating, testing and maintaining the following:
    • process measurement sensing and indicating systems; 
    • analytical instrumentation; 
    • signal conversion and transmission devices; 
    • data acquisition and display systems; 
    • monitoring devices and alarm systems; 
    • control devices and systems; 
    • final control elements; 
  • installing, servicing, calibrating and maintaining equipment for calibration, reference or comparison standards; 
  • installing, inspecting, testing, disconnecting and connecting electrical wiring to instrument installations; 
  • maintaining, installing and testing air distribution systems; 
  • installing, inspecting, testing, servicing and removing instruments; 
  • installing and removing pneumatic tubing, process tubing and piping; 
  • using hand tools, power tools, testing equipment and specialty tools required by the designated trade;
  • incorporating modifications to systems and components; 
  • applying knowledge and understanding of operating processes and their interrelationship with instrumentation. 

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of instrumentation and control technician:

  • installing, calibrating, testing and maintaining the following:
    • process measurement sensing and indicating systems;
    • analytical instrumentation;
    • signal conversion and transmission devices;
    • data acquisition and display systems;
    • monitoring devices and alarm systems;
    • control devices and systems;
    • final control elements;
  • installing, servicing, calibrating and maintaining equipment for calibration, reference or comparison standards;
  • installing, inspecting, testing, disconnecting and connecting electrical wiring to instrument installations;
  • maintaining, installing and testing air distribution systems;
  • installing, inspecting, testing, servicing and removing instruments;
