Scope of Profession - Agricultural Equipment Technician

In this section,

  • “agricultural equipment” means any self‑propelled, towed or stationary agricultural machinery used in farming, including any equipment and components required for the operation of the machinery, and includes the following:
    • internal combustion engines and components, both stationary and mobile;
    • rubber tired and rubber or steel tracked towing equipment, commonly called tractors;
    • towed primary and secondary tillage equipment commonly called ploughs (mouldboard, disk, chisel) and cultivators;
    • towed and self‑propelled equipment commonly called seeders, inclusive of all crops;
    • towed or self‑propelled equipment commonly called sprayers or broadcasters;
    • towed and self‑propelled harvesting equipment commonly called balers, swathers, windrowers, combines or forage harvesters;
    • miscellaneous equipment and components required in the production, distribution and transportation of farm produce;
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the repair, maintenance and service of agricultural equipment.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities within the designated trade of agricultural equipment technician:

  • repairing, maintaining and servicing of agricultural equipment, parts and components, including the following: 
    • internal combustion engines and components;
    • power trains; 
    • electrical and electronic systems;
    • hydraulic systems; 
    • steering systems; 
    • braking systems; 
    • wheels and tracked undercarriages; 
    • heating and air conditioning systems; 
    • soil preparation systems; 
    • harvesting systems; 
    • spraying systems;
    • grain handling equipment; 
    • miscellaneous equipment and systems used in the production, distribution and transportation of farm produce; 
  • with respect to gasoline and diesel internal combustion 2- and 4-stroke cycle engines, 
    • inspecting and testing engines and components before and after repair using a variety of hand and power tools and measuring and testing equipment, 
    • inspecting, testing, repairing and replacing components of the following: 
      • liquid cooling systems; 
      • air cooling filters or screening systems; 
      • engine lubrication systems; 
      • gasoline engine fuel systems; 
      • diesel engine fuel systems; 
      • air-induction systems on diesel engines, 
    • inspecting, adjusting and replacing gasoline engine ignition components, 
    • inspecting, testing, adjusting, repairing and replacing elements of engine governor systems, 
    • inspecting and replacing elements of engine exhaust systems, 
    • dismantling, repairing, replacing and reassembling damaged or worn components of cylinder heads, and 
    • dismantling, cleaning, inspecting, rebuilding and reassembling the various types of cylinder block assemblies; 
  • with respect to engine starting systems, inspecting, testing, replacing and repairing components of electric starter circuits; 
  • with respect to electrical systems, 
    • inspecting, testing, servicing and replacing storage batteries, 
    • testing, rebuilding, adjusting and replacing components of electrical charging systems, and 
    • testing, overhauling, adjusting and replacing components of lighting, warning and safety electrical systems; 
  • with respect to clutches, hydraulic couplings, transmissions and transfer cases, 
    • inspecting, adjusting or replacing the following: 
      • clutches and components;
      • components of hydraulic couplings; 
      • components of manual shift transmissions; 
      • automatic gear change transmissions; 
      • single and multiple speed transfer cases,
    • repairing clutches and components, 
    • rebuilding the following: 
      • components of manual shift transmissions; 
      • automatic gear change transmissions; 
      • single and multiple speed transfer cases;
      • power shift transmissions, and 
    • installing single and multiple speed transfer cases; 
  • with respect to drivelines, rear and front axle assemblies and differential and final drives, 
    • inspecting and replacing the following: 
      • drive shafts and universal joints and components; 
      • components of front and rear differentials; 
      • components of front and rear axles and final drives; 
      • tires, wheels and components, 
    • adjusting components of front and rear differentials, and 
    • adjusting components of front and rear axles and final drives; 
  • with respect to steering systems, 
    • inspecting components of the following: 
      • manually operated steering systems; 
      • hydraulic and electronically assisted steering systems; 
      • controlled differential (pivot) and articulated steering, 
    • reconditioning and replacing components of manually operated steering systems, 
    • testing, repairing, adjusting and replacing components of hydraulic and electronically assisted steering systems, and 
    • testing, repairing, replacing and adjusting components of controlled differential (pivot) and articulated steering; 
  • with respect to braking systems and power take-offs, 
    • inspecting, replacing, repairing and adjusting components of the following: 
      • mechanical braking systems; 
      • vehicle hydraulic braking systems; 
      • air and electric braking systems,
    • testing components of mechanical braking systems, 
    • rebuilding components of vehicle hydraulic braking systems, and 
    • repairing and replacing power take-offs;
  • with respect to cabs, canopies and cab heating systems and air conditioning systems,
    • inspecting, repairing, replacing, installing and adjusting components of cabs or canopies and cab heating systems, and
    • inspecting, repairing, replacing, and adjusting components of cab air conditioning systems; 
  • operating tow trucks and related recovery equipment to assist in repair or moving equipment to a location where repairs can be performed; 
  • with respect to agricultural equipment, inspecting, adjusting, aligning, repairing and replacing components of the following: 
    • ploughs; 
    • spreaders; 
    • harrows; 
    • potato planters and grain drills; 
    • sprayers; 
    • grain and pea combines; 
    • potato harvesters; 
    • balers; 
    • forage harvesters; 
  • testing, removing and rebuilding components of grain and pea combines; 
  • testing, removing and rebuilding components of potato harvesters.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of agricultural equipment technician:

  • repairing, maintaining and servicing of agricultural equipment, parts and components, including the following:
    • internal combustion engines and components;
    • power trains;
    • electrical and electronic systems;
    • hydraulic systems;
    • steering systems;
    • braking systems;
    • wheels and tracked undercarriages;
