Scope of Profession - Cabinetmaker

In this section,

  • “millwork” means millwork of all types and includes the following:
    • joinery;
    • framework;
    • architectural fixture work, including the following:
      • stair work and balustrades;
      • special design doors and windows;
      • custom dining rooms, lounges and lobbies;
      • other similar work;
    • custom millwork, including the following:
      • carcase units;
      • kitchen cabinets;
      • vanities, screens and planters;
      • shelf units;
      • other similar work;
    • custom furniture, including the following:
      • tables and chairs;
      • commercial furniture;
      • institutional furniture;
      • other similar work;
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the fabrication and installation of millwork.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities within the designated trade of cabinetmaker: 

  • fabricating and installing millwork;
  • setting up and operating woodworking machines and equipment; 
  • making layouts and patterns; 
  • cutting, shaping, moulding and assembling components of wood and wood substitutes in accordance with varying specifications; 
  • using fasteners and adhesive; 
  • using machines and equipment; 
  • using laminating procedures; 
  • using hardware;
  • building and installing doors, door frames and stairs; 
  • interpreting blueprints; 
  • developing production drawings using manual and computer-aided design (CAD); 
  • packaging and shipping millwork; 
  • using manual and computer design and layout; 
  • using and maintaining hand and portable power-operated tools; 
  • machining furniture and cabinet components; 
  • bending and laminating cabinet and furniture components; 
  • veneering, inlaying and applying laminated plastics; 
  • sanding cabinets and furniture components; 
  • fastening, clipping, glueing or otherwise applying non-wood materials to millwork pieces;
  • performing sub-assembly, final assembly and pre-finishing of cabinets, furniture and millwork; 
  • preparing and applying finishes; 
  • installing millwork and cabinets on site; 
  • remodeling and refinishing furniture; 
  • using and programming computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines, computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) processes.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of cabinetmaker:

  • fabricating and installing millwork;
  • setting up and operating woodworking machines and equipment;
  • making layouts and patterns;
  • cutting, shaping, moulding and assembling components of wood and wood substitutes in accordance with varying specifications;
  • using fasteners and adhesive;
  • using machines and equipment;
  • using laminating procedures;
  • using hardware;
  • building and installing doors, door frames and stairs;
  • interpreting blueprints;
  • developing production drawings using manual and computer‑aided design (CAD);
  • packaging and shipping millwork;
  • using manual and computer design and layout;
  • using and maintaining hand and portable power‑operated tools;
  • machining furniture and cabinet components;
  • bending and laminating cabinet and furniture components;
  • veneering, inlaying and applying laminated plastics;
  • sanding cabinets and furniture components;
  • fastening, clipping, glueing or otherwise applying non‑wood materials to millwork pieces;
