Scope of Profession - Sprinkler Systems Installer

In this section,

  • “sprinkler system” means any kind of residential, commercial or industrial sprinkler system and includes the following:
    • automatic fire suppression systems;
    • automatic detection suppression systems;
    • stand pipe and hose systems;
    • fire protection water supply systems, including underground mains;
    • fire pumps and controls;
    • fire extinguishers;
    • fire hydrants and related equipment;
    • fire stopping materials;
    • piping, controls and fittings that are part of or ancillary to a sprinkler system;
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the fabrication, installation, alteration, adjustment, maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following activities are performed within the designated trade of sprinkler systems installer: 

  • fabricating, installing, altering, adjusting, maintaining and repairing sprinkler systems, including the following: 
    • wet sprinkler systems; 
    • dry sprinkler systems; 
    • preaction and deluge systems; 
    • foam systems; 
    • CO2 and other gas extinguishing systems; 
    • dry chemical systems; 
    • exposure protection systems; 
  • determining location, size and material required from prints and specifications; 
  • compiling material breakdown and takeoff; 
  • identifying and using tools and special equipment that are used to carry out the activities set out in this section; 
  • erecting and using steel scaffolding, power-operated scaffolding and swing stages; 
  • applying codes to installation, inspection and maintenance requirements;
  • rigging equipment and piping components; 
  • installing and maintaining appliances, controls, equipment, piping and hangers; 
  • examining, inspecting and testing sprinkler systems.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of sprinkler systems installer:

  • fabricating, installing, altering, adjusting, maintaining and repairing sprinkler systems, including the following:
    • wet sprinkler systems;
    • dry sprinkler systems;
    • preaction and deluge systems;
    • foam systems;
    • CO2 and other gas extinguishing systems;
    • dry chemical systems;
    • exposure protection systems;
  • determining location, size and material required from prints and specifications;
  • compiling material breakdown and takeoff;
  • identifying and using tools and special equipment that are used to carry out the restricted activities set out in this section;
  • erecting and using steel scaffolding, power‑operated scaffolding and swing stages;
  • applying codes to installation, inspection and maintenance requirements;

  • installing and maintaining appliances, controls, equipment, piping and hangers;
  • examining, inspecting and testing sprinkler systems.
