Scope of Profession - Ironworker (Structural/Ornamental)

In this section,

  • “Alberta Building Code” means the National Building Code ‑ 2019 Alberta Edition declared in force, as amended or replaced from time to time, by the Building Code Regulation (AR 31/2015);
  • “metal building systems” means buildings that
    • are non‑residential, prefabricated metal structures, not more than 2 storeys, that meet Alberta Building Code requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association,
    • are constructed of an interior load‑bearing framework and an outer non‑load‑bearing cladding, and
    • are erected, assembled and installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions without modification to the manufacturer’s specifications, but does not include Quonsets or other frameless metal buildings;
  • “reinforced concrete” means concrete that is cast in place or precast and is reinforced with concrete reinforcement materials;
  • “storey” has the meaning assigned to it in the Alberta Building Code;
  • “structures” means the following:
    • curtain walls;
    • bridges, including abutments, decks, girders, piers and permanent guard rails;
    • metal building systems;
    • buildings that are engineered and constructed of metal, steel or reinforced concrete, other than buildings constructed using insulated concrete forms;
  • “undertakings of the branch of the designated trade” means the following:
    • the field fabrication, assembly, erection and disassembly of structures, other than the demolition of structures;
    • the service, maintenance and repair of structures;
    • the field fabrication and erection of structural, miscellaneous and ornamental metal work;
    • the erection and placement of precast or prestressed concrete structures.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the branch of the designated trade, the following are activities within the ironworker (structural/ornamental) branch of the designated trade of ironworker:

  • fabricating, assembling, erecting and disassembling of structures in the field; 
  • servicing, maintaining and repairing of structures;
  • fabricating and erecting structural, miscellaneous and ornamental metal work in the field; 
  • erecting and placing precast or prestressed concrete structures; 
  • using detailed drawings, blueprints and other specifications; 
  • using hand tools, power tools and shop equipment, including transits, levels, explosive actuated tools, post drills, radial drills, angle rolls, punches, shears, brakes and presses; 
  • using, setting up or assembling rigging equipment, including wire rope, block and tackle, cranes, derricks, hoisting equipment, swing stages, aerial platforms and scaffolds; 
  • using oxyfuel cutting and arc tack welding equipment in heat straightening, cutting and joining metals; 
  • using new technology in relation to the activities set out in this section; 
  • placing mechanical equipment and components; 
  • using and maintaining fall protection systems; 
  • installing exterior and interior doors and windows; 
  • installing caulking, adhesives and sealant materials.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the branch of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the ironworker (structural/ornamental) branch of the designated trade of ironworker:

  • fabricating, assembling, erecting and disassembling of structures in the field;
  • servicing, maintaining and repairing of structures;
  • fabricating and erecting structural, miscellaneous and ornamental metal work in the field;
  • erecting and placing precast or prestressed concrete structures;
  • using detailed drawings, blueprints and other specifications;
  • using hand tools, power tools and shop equipment, including transits, levels, explosive actuated tools, post drills, radial drills, angle rolls, punches, shears, brakes and presses;
  • using, setting up or assembling rigging equipment, including wire rope, block and tackle, cranes, derricks, hoisting equipment, swing stages, aerial platforms and scaffolds;
  • using oxyfuel cutting and arc tack welding equipment in heat straightening, cutting and joining metals;
  • using new technology in relation to the restricted activities set out in this section;
  • placing mechanical equipment and components;
  • using and maintaining fall protection systems.
