Scope of Profession - Transport Refrigeration Technician

In this section,

  • “auxiliary power units” include mobile generator systems and other alternative power supplies, the main purpose of which is to support mobile refrigeration and heating equipment;
  • “mobile equipment” includes trucks, trailers and specialized shipping containers with heating and air conditioning systems;
  • “mobile refrigeration and heating equipment” means any type of primary or secondary refrigeration system used to supply optimal environmental conditions for transportation of goods by mobile equipment, including the following components:
    • piping;
    • compressor assemblies;
    • condenser assemblies;
    • evaporator assemblies;
    • system controls and control valves;
    • air handling and distribution equipment;
    • humidifier assemblies;
    • air cleaner assemblies;
    • system accessories and ancillary components;
    • equipment used to monitor and control refrigeration systems and detect malfunctions in refrigeration systems;
    • auxiliary heaters;
    • mechanical generating systems;
    • electrical and hybrid power supply systems;
    • diesel engines and related systems;
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the installation, maintenance, service, alteration and repair of mobile refrigeration and heating equipment and auxiliary power units.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following activities are performed within the designated trade of transport refrigeration technician: 

  • installing, maintaining, servicing, altering and repairing 
    • mobile refrigeration and heating equipment, and 
    • auxiliary power units; 
  • using hand tools, power tools and specialized tools and equipment while working on mobile refrigeration and heating equipment; 
  • using mechanical, electrical, electronic and other measuring and testing devices in relation to mobile refrigeration and heating equipment; 
  • carrying out soldering, brazing and welding on or in relation to mobile refrigeration and heating equipment; 
  • maintaining and making electrical repairs to existing mobile refrigeration and heating equipment and auxiliary power units from the breaker or disconnect switch as follows: 
    • repairing burnt, broken or damaged wires and connections; 
    • making upgrades to controls of existing mobile refrigeration and heating equipment; 
  • installing, maintaining and repairing natural gas and propane gas auxiliary heating units as well as hybrid control systems; 
  • installing, maintaining and repairing engines and compressors; 
  • installing, removing, recycling, storing and disposing of primary and secondary refrigerants; 
  • transporting, handling and using refrigerants and other dangerous goods related to mobile refrigeration and heating systems.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of transport refrigeration technician:

  • installing, maintaining, servicing, altering and repairing
    • mobile refrigeration and heating equipment, and
    • auxiliary power units;
  • using hand tools, power tools and specialized tools and equipment while working on mobile refrigeration and heating equipment;
  • using mechanical, electrical, electronic and other measuring and testing devices in relation to mobile refrigeration and heating equipment;
  • carrying out soldering, brazing and welding on or in relation to mobile refrigeration and heating equipment;
  • maintaining and making electrical repairs to existing mobile refrigeration and heating equipment and auxiliary power units from the breaker or disconnect switch as follows:
