Scope of Profession - Landscape Horticulturist

In this section, “undertakings of the designated trade” means the sale, growth, installation and maintenance of plant or related materials and includes the following:

  • landscape construction;
  • landscape maintenance;
  • the operation of greenhouses, nurseries and garden centres;
  • arboriculture;
  • tree moving;
  • the sale, growth, installation and maintenance of turf grasses;
  • designing, installing and maintaining irrigation systems.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities within the designated trade of landscape horticulturist:

  • selling, growing, installing and maintaining plant or related materials; 
  • applying principles of landscape design and construction; 
  • constructing and installing landscape planters, walks and other accessories of various materials; 
  • handling orders of plant and related materials; 
  • operating and servicing the tools and machinery used in the designated trade; 
  • applying the principles governing the following:
    • the operation of greenhouses, nurseries and garden centres; 
    • sod production; 
    • interior and exterior landscape maintenance;
    • plant production; 
    • the use of soils; 
    • the use of plant nutrients; 
    • the use of pesticides; 
    • the control of plant diseases and pests; 
    • tree care; 
  • applying knowledge respecting botany and plant identification.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of landscape horticulturist:

  • selling, growing, installing and maintaining plant or related materials;
  • applying principles of landscape design and construction;
  • constructing and installing landscape planters, walks and other accessories of various materials;
  • handling orders of plant and related materials;
  • operating and servicing the tools and machinery used in the designated trade;
  • applying the principles governing the following:
    • the operation of greenhouses, nurseries and garden centres;
    • sod production;
    • interior and exterior landscape maintenance;
    • plant production;
    • the use of soils;
    • the use of plant nutrients;
    • the use of pesticides;
    • the control of plant diseases and pests;
    • tree care;
  • applying knowledge respecting botany and plant identification.
