Scope of Profession - Elevator Constructor

In this section,

  • “elevator system” includes the following:
    • electric elevators;
    • hydraulic elevators;
    • escalators;
    • workers’ passenger hoists or lifts;
    • dumbwaiters;
    • hand operated elevators;
    • parking garage elevators;
    • moving walkways;
    • stagelifts;
    • lifts for persons with physical disabilities;
    • residential elevators;
    • elevator entrances;
    • elevator doors and door operating equipment;
    • electrical wiring and conduits from controllers to
      • signals,
      • operating circuits, and
      • remote panels or signals;
    • fireman service;
    • signal, lighting and control systems;
    • piping relative to hydraulic elevators;
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the following:
    • the installation, removal, alteration, repair, modification and maintenance of elevator systems and
      • motors, drives and motor controllers, and
      • emergency power systems and security systems associated with elevator systems;
        • the operation of temporary and incomplete elevator systems;
        • the testing of elevator systems.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities within the designated trade of elevator constructor: 

  • installing, removing, altering, repairing, modifying and maintaining elevator systems and 
    • motors, drives and motor controllers, and 
    • emergency power systems and security systems associated with elevator systems; 
  • operating temporary and incomplete elevator systems; 
  • testing elevator systems; 
  • using hand tools, power tools, testing equipment and specialty tools required by the designated trade; 
  • applying elevator, electrical and mechanical theory to the carrying out of the activities set out in this section; 
  • drawing, pulling, terminating and testing of conductors or cables into controller or panel systems pertaining to elevators or escalators; 
  • installing and laying out hoistways, raceways, conduits, cable trays or troughs, wireways and fittings in elevator systems; 
  • installing, troubleshooting, testing and laying out controllers and remote panels in elevator systems; 
  • interpreting electrical and mechanical drawings and prints;
  • interpreting safety codes for elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walks and freight platform lifts; 
  • coordinating elevator work with other construction trades;
  • installing all rail guides, beams, sheaves, templates, overhead work and all material used for mounting elevator systems in the machine room or below the machine room; 
  • installing scaffolding for the erection of elevator systems; 
  • installing and assembling elevator cabs and panels; 
  • welding, drilling and rigging; 
  • handling and hoisting elevator and escalator material.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of elevator constructor:

  • installing, removing, altering, repairing, modifying and maintaining elevator systems and
    • motors, drives and motor controllers, and
    • emergency power systems and security systems associated with elevator systems;
  • operating temporary and incomplete elevator systems;
  • testing elevator systems;
  • using hand tools, power tools, testing equipment and specialty tools required by the designated trade;
  • applying elevator, electrical and mechanical theory to the carrying out of the restricted activities set out in this section;
  • drawing, pulling, terminating and testing of conductors or cables into controller or panel systems pertaining to elevators or escalators;
  • installing and laying out hoistways, raceways, conduits, cable trays or troughs, wireways and fittings in elevator systems;
  • installing, troubleshooting, testing and laying out controllers and remote panels in elevator systems;
  • interpreting electrical and mechanical drawings and prints;
  • interpreting safety codes for elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walks and freight platform lifts;
  • coordinating elevator work with other construction trades;
