On July 20, 2022, the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act (STAEA) replaced the 30-year-old Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act to modernize apprenticeship education and skilled trades regulation in Alberta, creating a more flexible and efficient system. Industry will continue to play a critical role in setting the standards for trade certification. Apprenticeship education programs will continue to include a combination of on-the-job and classroom instruction. Apprentices will still require on-the-job instruction from a certified journeyperson through paid employment.
