Coming to Alberta 

Transfer to Alberta Permanently

If you plan to permanently move to Alberta and continue your apprenticeship, follow the steps below before leaving your current province or territory:

  1. Confirm your Trade is Designated in Alberta
    • Ensure your trade appears on Alberta's list of designated trades; otherwise, your apprenticeship may not be eligible for transfer.
      • Transfer credit is only considered if you register in Alberta in the same trade as your existing apprenticeship. If you register in a different or unrelated trade, your previous training or experience may not be recognized.
  1. Check Alberta’s Apprenticeship Eligibility Requirements
    • Review Alberta’s requirements to confirm you are eligible to register as an apprentice in your trade.
  1. Report Completed Training and Work Experience
    • Before applying, update your home apprenticeship authority with all of your:
      • On-the-job training hours, and
      • Completed classroom instruction.
  1. Apply to an Alberta Apprenticeship Education Program
  1. Submit Supporting Documents with Your Alberta Apprenticeship Application
    • Upload clear copies of the following documents:
      • Journeyperson certificate (front and back),
      • Apprenticeship ID card,
      • Official apprenticeship transcripts,
      • Pre-employment certificate or diploma and official transcript, if applicable, and
      • If no apprenticeship documents are available, a copy of your Canadian high school transcripts (unless you attended high school in Alberta).
  1. Provide Additional Documents (If Applicable)
    • Applicants from the following jurisdictions must also provide the specified documents:

Letter from CPA (Experience Record Request) to include:

  • Your first and last name,

Apprenticeship and Industry Training will verify the information you provided with your home apprenticeship authority before any credit may be applied.

Temporarily Work or Attend Classroom Instruction in Alberta

  • If you are a registered apprentice in another Canadian province/territory, you may be eligible to work temporarily or attend classroom instruction in Alberta, while maintaining your apprenticeship registration in your home jurisdiction.
  • For more information, contact the apprenticeship authority in your home province or territory. 

Moving Bonus for Skilled Trades

The Alberta is Calling: Moving Bonus, is a one-time refundable tax credit of $5,000 for up to 2,000 eligible individuals in the skilled trades who move to Alberta, work in an eligible occupation, and meet all other eligibility criteria.

To be eligible for this program, an individual must move to Alberta between May 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, work in an eligible occupation, and reside in Alberta for at least 12 months. 

Eligible individuals will be able to apply starting May 1, 2025.

Applications will be assessed on a first-come, first-served basis. The Moving Bonus Program will approve or deny submitted applications in the order applications are received.

Leaving Alberta

Transfer to Another Province or Territory Permanently

If you are planning to move out of Alberta and continue your apprenticeship elsewhere in Canada, be sure to take the following steps before you leave Alberta:

  1. Submit Your Hours
    • Submit all apprenticeship hours you have earned in Alberta through your MyTradesecrets account. Ensure that your hours are approved by AIT before you leave. 
  1. Confirm Your Trade is Designated in the Other Jurisdiction 
    • Make sure your trade is designated in the province or territory you are moving to. If your trade is not designated, your apprenticeship may not be eligible for transfer.
  1. Contact the New Jurisdiction
    • Visit the website or contact the apprenticeship authority in the province or territory you are moving to. They will provide details on how to apply to their apprenticeship program.
  1. Apply to the New Apprenticeship Program
    • Submit an application to the apprenticeship program in your new province or territory and include all required information.

The new jurisdiction will contact AIT in Alberta to verify your apprenticeship progress. 

  • Any transfer credit you may receive will be determined by the new province or territory, based on the information confirmed by Alberta AIT.

Work Outside of Alberta Temporarily

If you plan to work in your trade outside of Alberta temporarily while maintaining your Alberta apprenticeship, you must request approval from AIT before starting work.

How to Request Approval: 

  1. Submit an employer letter
    • Upload a letter from your out-of-province employer, on official company letterhead, through the Documents tab of your MyTradesecrets account. The letter must include:
      • The trade you are employed in,
      • Your out-of-province employer’s contact name and position,
      • Your employment start date, and
      • The location where you will be working/where your work will be performed.
  2. Complete the Review Process with AIT
    • Once AIT reviews your employer letter, a response letter will be attached to your MyTradesecrets account with further instructions.

To submit on-the-job hours with your out-of-province employer toward your Alberta apprenticeship:

To have your on-the-job hours from an out-of-province employer counted towards your Alberta apprenticeship, follow the steps below:

  • If your trade is designated in both Alberta and your temporary province or territory:
  • If your trade is not designated in the other Province/Territory:

To submit on-the-job hours worked with an out-of-province employer that was not counted toward your Alberta Apprenticeship:

If you were not a registered apprentice in another province or territory, but worked in the trade, your work experience may not have counted towards your Alberta apprenticeship.

  • Your current Alberta sponsor/employer can recommend your time worked out-of-province by completing a Sponsor Recommends Time Credit Letter . This letter can be uploaded to your MyTradesecrets account.

Take Classroom Instruction Outside of Alberta

If you are an Alberta apprentice and wish to take your classroom instruction in another province or territory, you must submit a request for approval.

  • Submit your request with the following information. Submit a separate request for each level if you are applying for more than one.
    • Your AIT ID number,
    • Your date of birth,
    • Your phone number (where the apprenticeship authority can reach you),
    • The trade you are registered in as an Alberta apprentice,
    • The level of classroom instruction you wish to take outside of Alberta,
    • The location (province/territory and, if possible, where you want to take the training),
      • Contact the training institution to confirm seat availability. If no seats are available, you must attend training in Alberta.
    • The preferred time or period for the classroom instruction, and
    • Your reason for wanting to take your training outside Alberta.

Your request to take training outside Alberta must be approved by the apprenticeship authority in the other province or territory. If approved, they will contact you with next steps.

Note:

  • You are responsible for any fees associated with attending training outside Alberta.
  • Alberta AIT does not provide funding for training completed in other jurisdictions.
  • If your request is not approved, you will be expected to complete your classroom instruction in Alberta.

Additionally, to obtain your Alberta trade certificate, you must complete at least one term of classroom instruction in Alberta or successfully challenge an Alberta examination, provided you have approval from your Alberta sponsor.
