Look for the Delivery Method and Type in the class catalogue to find out what to expect.
Delivery Methods
Classes may use one of several delivery methods to present course materials.
Standard Class Delivery
- The traditional method, where you’ll learn theory in the classroom and get hands-on experience in the shop or lab.
- Classes run for a set period, usually 6-8 weeks, and are instructor-led.
Blended Learning
- Delivery varies by school and generally includes:
- practical learning led by instructors in-person, in the shop, and
- theory learning occurring online or through a blend of online and in-person classes.
- You may be required to be on campus to participate in online learning.
- Check with your school to find out the specific requirements and format for your class.
Competency Based Apprenticeship Training (CBAT) Modules
- Learn at your own pace with help from instructors.
- Complete each module before moving to the next.
- Available only for certain trades.
Front End (Self-Study)
- You’ll buy a study package and complete it before attending classroom instruction.
- This is available only for Mobile Crane and Boom Truck operators at NAIT.
Delivery Types
Your classroom instruction period may be structured in one of several ways.
Block Release
- Classes have fixed start and end dates.
- You’ll leave work for a set period (usually 6 to 8 weeks per year depending on the trade) to complete your training.
Competency-based Apprenticeship Training (CBAT)
- The start date is fixed, but you can finish early if you complete the modules and pass the exams.
- You have a bit of extra time to finish, up to 2 weeks more than traditional programs.
- If you finish early, you can stay in class for extra time with the instructor.
Distance
- Study the theory from home with online modules.
- Go to a training site for hands-on work.
- Instructors are available by phone, email, or online.
- You need a computer and internet access.
Mobile
- Training is brought to you, with different start dates to fit industry needs.
Weekly Apprenticeship Training System (WATS)
- Go to class one day a week over a longer period, so you can keep working full-time.
- This works best if you live near the training site.
