History:
'The American Welding Society (AWS) was founded in 1919 as a multifaceted, nonprofit organization with a goal to advance the science, technology and application of welding and related joining disciplines. From factory floor to high-rise construction, from military weaponry to home products, the AWS continues to lead the way in supporting welding education and technology development to ensure a strong, competitive and exciting way of life. The AWS serves 50,000 members worldwide. Membership consists of engineers, scientists, educators, researchers, welders, inspectors, welding foremen, company executives and officers, and sales associates. Interests include automatic, semi-automatic and manual welding, as well as brazing, soldering, ceramics, lamination, robotics, and welding safety and health'

In terms of organizational structure, the U.S. and Canada are divided into some 22 Districts, with a number of Sections contained in each District. Chartered in 1997, the AWS Alberta Section is part of District 19. Since its inception, the section has worked enthusiastically within the overall AWS mission to 'advance the science, technology and application of welding and allied joining and cutting processes, including brazing, soldering and thermal spraying'. We do this through the hosting of yearly seminars and organizing a series of welding-related technical dinner meetings. From the beginning, the AWS Alberta Section has worked toward the goal of establishing perpetual scholarships and endowments in welding related disciplines. The Section is very pleased to sponsor an Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Scholarship.
