History:
Merit Contractors Association of Alberta was established in 1986 by a group of open shop construction contractors. Their objective was to provide non-union construction employees with a comprehensive benefit plan, excellent working conditions, training programs, and other human resource services to its member companies.

Today, the Association has over 1,400 member firms, including general, sub-trade and maintenance contractors, in all sectors of the construction industry. While the Association's member companies vary in size and type of work, they all share a common desire to improve working conditions for employees and enhance opportunities for growth in open shop construction.

Merit provides its members and their employees with:
- A comprehensive benefit plan specifically designed for the construction industry;
- Access to a group retirement and pension plan;
- Construction skills and supervisory training programs for employees;
- Tuition Refund Program for apprentices employed by Merit members;
- Management courses and seminars;
- Recruitment website at ab.constructionjobstores.com.

Merit understands the importance of a highly skilled and competitive workforce. That is why we have been developing and delivering training programs for over 21 years. From construction skills to supervisory training, Merit's training programs are designed to meet the changing needs of the construction industry and its workers. The Association also offers a Construction Boot Camp, for those who would like to work in the construction industry, but have little or no experience in it. This program provides basic, introductory knowledge that prepares students for careers in the construction industry.

Merit understands the value of a well-educated workforce and has taken a leading role to promote apprenticeship. Our members actively employ and train apprentices. We offer an Apprenticeship Tuition Refund Program for Merit member employees. We are the proud sponsor of several awards, including the Alberta Apprenticeship & Industry Training Scholarships.
