History:
Sheet Metal Workers' International Association Local #8 is proud and pleased to be a partner in the Alberta Apprenticeship Scholarship program. Training and education are of the highest priority to our Local.

The Amalgamated Sheet Metal Workers' International Alliance (later to become the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association) was first formed January 25, 1888 in Toledo, Ohio.

In 1905, the year Alberta became a province, a group of tradesman banded together and joined with the Amalgamated Sheet Metal Workers' International Alliance to obtain better wages, safety regulations, benefits and job site conditions. Local units formed in Calgary (1905), Edmonton (1907) and Lethbridge (1953). The Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge Locals then amalgamated on May 1, 1973 with jurisdiction (under the SMWIA) of the Province of Alberta and District of McKenzie, N.W.T.

This Union celebrated its Centennial in 2005. Through recessions and booms, the Union has flourished without wavering from its purpose of protecting and bargaining on behalf of its membership.
