Period Exam Update

Period exams will be reinstated for the 2023/24 academic year.

If you begin your classroom instruction on or after August 1, 2023, you will be required to write a period exam to complete your class.

Period exams continue to be suspended for classroom instruction periods beginning between March 2020 and July 31, 2023.

You will receive credit for your period exam requirement to complete your period if your instructor submits a passing mark for you at the completion of your class.

  • The standard for determining a passing mark in technical training has not changed.
  • This exam suspension does not apply to students attending a Pre-Employment, Certificate or Diploma Program.
    • These students will have to write the associated period exam and complete any practical exams as required if they register as an apprentice.

Period exams were suspended in March 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Once restrictions were lifted, the suspension continued so AIT could review the value of period exams as part of the overall apprenticeship system. During this time, AIT heard from many industry representatives that they consider period exams to be a significant component of Alberta’s apprenticeship education model.

In response to this, AIT will reinstate period exams effective August 1, 2023, and continue working with industry to consider the future of apprenticeship assessments, including on-the-job instruction and mentorship.

Prior Learning Assessments and Red Seal Exams

  • AIT continues to offer in-person Prior Learning Assessment exams at our offices throughout the province.
  • AIT also works with post-secondary institutions to make Red Seal exam sessions available at the end of final period classes.
    • You also have the choice to get certified without writing your Red Seal exam.
  • Please contact the AIT Information Line at 1-800-248-4823 if you need information or wish to discuss your apprenticeship.
