Struggling to pass an exam after two attempts? You might need to complete an AIT Training Plan before you can request another try.
Eligibility
You will be required to complete an AIT Training Plan before you request an additional exam attempt if:
- you are taking an eligible exam (see below)
- you have had two or more unsuccessful attempts at the same eligible exam, and
- you earned a mark of 60% or higher on at least one attempt.
Eligible exams:
- Trades Qualifier exams: Work Experience, Recognized Credential, and Recognized Training
- Challenge exams: for apprentices challenging a period of classroom instruction
- Red Seal exams: for certified journeypersons who apply separately after certification
- Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) exams: excluding entrance exams

- Apprentice Red Seal exams (prior to certification): after two attempts, you may either repeat your final periof of classroom instruction or, if you've passed the final period exam, be certified without the Red Seal endorsement. You may apply separately at a later date to attempt the Red Seal Exam again.
- Apprentice Period exams (as part of classroom instruction): after two attempts, you will be required to repeat the period of classroom instruction or request an exam challenge

- Download the form: Training Plan Form
- Fill out the form to create a training plan to prepare for the exam
- use your exam results letter or the exam counselling sheet to create your plan
- ask your sponsor, mentor, employer, or trainer for advice
- Contact your local AIT office to discuss your plan.
- Complete all training/study included in your plan.
- Submit your form, by uploading it to the Documents tab your MyTradesecrets account, within 30 days of contacting AIT.
- If you are a Trades Qualifier applicant, you must submit at least 3 months prior to your 18-month application deadline.
- Wait for AIT to evaluate your plan and provide a decision whether to allow your additional exam request.
An additional exam attempt is not guaranteed and will be based on the quality of your training plan.
