Top Employer of Indigenous Apprentices Award

An outstanding commitment to recruiting and training Indigenous apprentices helps strengthen and diversify the apprenticeship and industry training system, now and into the future.

The Top Employer of Indigenous Apprentices Award provides formal recognition of outstanding employers.

Nomination information:

Top Employers of Indigenous Apprentices are nominated for the award by members of the Alberta Indigenous Apprenticeship Project team.

Award criteria:

Recipients of the Top Employer of Indigenous Apprentices must:

  • demonstrate a strong support of apprenticeship training through:
    - a history of training Indigenous apprentices;
    - training Indigenous apprentices in more than one trade;
    - providing opportunity (e.g. dual apprenticeships or dual certification opportunities, consistently hiring entry-level apprentices)
    - participating in career fairs to promote apprenticeship training and careers in the trades to Indigenous peoples; and
    - involvement in CAREERS: The Next Generation activities.
  • work to increase the probability of an Indigenous apprentice's success in the trade by:
    - providing an excellent training environment;
    - encouraging strong work ethics;
    - ensuring management is supportive of training (on-the-job, technical, additional); and
    - expecting excellence in work performed.
  • create an environment of excellence where:
    - Indigenous apprentices experience most areas of their trade;
    - career progress is acknowledged or rewarded; and
    - there is an opportunity for long term employment (if realistic, considering the nature of the trade).
