Appliance Service Technician

Appliance service technicians are part of a dynamic industry that reflects the rapid technology revolution.  They install, service and repair household and commercial appliances. This diverse industry offers a large spectrum of work environments including homes, the hospitality industry, medical facilities, jails, grocery stores, bakeries, airports, remote camps and railway companies.

In general, appliance service technicians:

  • diagnose concerns by interpreting the customer’s observations,
  • access manufacturers' service manuals and bulletins and use specialized tools and testing devices to locate the issue(s),
  • maintain appliances by disassembling, cleaning internal parts, replacing faulty or worn parts, reassembling and testing,
  • communicate with customers for the purpose of estimates, and the use and care of their appliances, and
  • prepare work orders, complete reports for billing, and maintain records for parts inventories and future service calls.

Those authorized to perform the restricted activities of this designated trade include:

  • Sponsored Apprentices, and
  • Certified Journeypersons.

Apprenticeship
  • The term of apprenticeship for an appliance service technician is 3 years (three 12-month periods) including a minimum of 1600 hours of on-the-job training each year, and 8 weeks of classroom instruction in each year.
  • Apprentices are expected to demonstrate progress in their apprenticeship program within 18 months by engaging in an activity that will lead to the completion of a period of the program.
  • Apprentices may attempt the Interprovincial Exam in the final period of their apprenticeship training and, if successful, be granted a Red Seal.
  • Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, the apprentice will receive a journeyperson certificate and an educational credential (Diploma).
