Scope of Profession - Parts Technician

In this section,

  • “parts” means any part, assembly or accessory pertaining to the following:
    • automobiles and trucks;
    • aviation;
    • electronics;
    • heavy duty vehicles and equipment;
    • agricultural equipment;
    • industrial equipment;
    • military equipment;
    • motorcycles;
    • outdoor power equipment;
    • recreational vehicles and equipment;
    • marine equipment;
    • turf equipment;
    • appliances;
  • “undertakings of the branch of the designated trade” means the stock handling, inventory control, storing, securing, identifying, cataloguing, ordering, shipping, transporting, receiving, inspecting, pricing, purchasing, issuing, marketing and selling of parts.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the branch of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, the following are activities within the materials technician branch of the designated trade of parts technician: 

  • assessing customer requirements and providing the commodities necessary for service, repair or replacement;
  • using electronic and non-electronic location systems, identification systems, communication systems and business procedures for the purpose of managing inventory and addressing customer needs; 
  • selling and distributing commodities; 
  • selecting, operating and basic maintenance of hand tools and material handling equipment; 
  • wrapping, packaging, labelling and strapping commodities; 
  • planning, maintaining and updating display areas; 
  • operating and managing tool cribs.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the branch of the designated trade, are restricted activities within the parts technician branch of the designated trade of parts technician:

  • assessing customer requirements and providing the parts necessary for service, repair or replacement;
  • using electronic and non‑electronic location systems, identification systems, communication systems and business procedures for the purpose of managing inventory and addressing customer needs;
  • selling and distributing parts;
  • selecting, operating and basic maintenance of hand tools and material handling equipment;
  • wrapping, packaging, labelling and strapping parts;
  • planning, maintaining and updating display areas;
  • operating and managing tool cribs.
