Using the New Record Book
-
- Work with a qualified mentor to develop competence in the required on-the-job activities for your period of apprenticeship.
- Have a qualified mentor verify your competences and sign off in your Record Book.
- Have your sponsor:
- endorse that a mentor has verified your competences, and
- record your on-the-job hours in the hours table.
- Submit the sponsor competence endorsement and the hours table:
- Online: through the Documents tab on your MyTradesecrets account.
- By mail or in person: To your regional Apprenticeship and Industry Training office
After you submit, Apprenticeship and Industry Training will review your submission, grant you credit toward your apprenticeship, and return the record book to you (if required).
Key Changes
The new Record Book works in almost the same way as the classic version, with some key changes:
Competence Verification
- Apprentices must have a qualified mentor verify that they are competent in a minimum number of on-the-job activities each period (refer to the progress tracker for specific requirements).
- Some competences are mandatory, while others are optional.
- Sponsors must endorse that a qualified mentor has verified the apprentice’s competence in the required tasks (in the End of Period Sponsor’s Competence Endorsement).
- Only the Sponsor’s end-of-period endorsement must be submitted to AIT.
Hours
- The apprentice must still earn a minimum number of hours each period and have them verified by their sponsor.
Certificate of Progress
- Record Books no longer contain a space for a Certificate of Progress stamp at the end of a period.
- This is recorded digitally and can be viewed through the apprentice’s individual MyTradesecrets account.
- Record books now have an Identification Label with an apprentice’s name, ID number, trade, and on-the-job training start date.
Progress Tracker
- Record books now include an overall progress tracker to help apprentices make sure they have met all the requirements to complete each period.
- This is not an official record of completion but is provided for the apprentice and sponsor to use for their own tracking purposes.
