Out-of-Province Canadian Credentials

Individuals holding a recognized trade credential from another Canadian province or territory are eligible to work in the full scope of the trade in Alberta based on their credential without registering with AIT or writing an examination.

Use the tool on this page to determine whether an out-of-province trade credential is recognized in Alberta.

Employers who have questions about the authenticity of a credential should contact the jurisdiction that issued the credential. For additional information, see Tips For Employers.

Red Seal Endorsements

Alberta participates in the Red Seal Program and recognizes out-of-province Red Seal endorsements in Red Seal trades that are designated in Alberta. Tradespeople who hold a valid certificate with a Red Seal can work in Alberta without further training or examination.

Non-Red Seal Credentials

Alberta also recognizes a wide variety of out-of-province credentials without Red Seal endorsements. Use the tool on this page to determine whether a trade credential without a Red Seal endorsement is recognized in Alberta.

Expired Credentials

Although some jurisdictions have expiry dates on their trade credential, the Red Seal endorsement does not expire.

  • An individual holding an expired, out-of-province trade credential with a Red Seal endorsement for a trade that is designated in Alberta may work in the province.
  • An individual holding an expired, out-of-province trade credential without a Red Seal endorsement for a trade that is designated in Alberta may not work in the province in a compulsory certification trade and should apply for certification under the Trades Qualifier Work Experience Program.

Programs for Individuals with Recognized Credentials

Professionals with a recognized credential may also apply for the Trades Qualifier - Recognized Credential Program to obtain an Alberta journeyperson and to obtain Red Seal endorsement if it wasn't obtained in the previous jurisdiction. However, this is not required in order to work in Alberta.
