History:
Syncrude Canada Ltd., located north of Fort McMurray, is the one of the world's largest producers of light sweet crude oil from oil sand.
For many years now, Syncrude has been one of Canada's largest employers of Aboriginal people. Our goal is to have Aboriginal participation in the workforce that reflects the demographics of the region. Aboriginal people comprise about 10% of the employee positions.
* We currently have the capacity to supply 15% of the nation's petroleum requirements.
* We operate large oil sand mines, utilities plants, bitumen extraction plants and upgrading facilities that process bitumen and produce value-added light, sweet crude oil for domestic consumption and export.
* In 2016, we produced 99.2 million barrels of Syncrude Sweet Blend.
* Our operations provide jobs for 14,000 people directly and indirectly across Canada.
* In total, Syncrude has conducted nearly $2.7 billion in business with Aboriginal companies.
* Syncrude is one of the largest private sector employers in Alberta, employing about 4,700 people directly and an average of 1,000-1,500 maintenance contractor employees.
* We spend more than $50 million annually on research and development. We also operate one of the largest private-sector research programs in Western Canada and are one of the top 50 R&D spenders in Canada.
* The Syncrude Project results in substantial returns to the people of Canada and Alberta, including an annual economic impact of $5 billion.
* To date, Syncrude has reclaimed over 3,700 hectares of land disturbed by mining operations. We have planted close to seven million tree and shrub seedlings.
* Our corporate headquarters are located in the city of Fort McMurray, 440 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. Our Mildred Lake facility is 40 kilometres north of the city, with our Aurora project located an additional 35 kilometres north of Mildred Lake. Our operations are found on the Athabasca Oil Sands Deposit.
